[Claude nods and takes his hand as they get moving. That would be the most likely scenario, he agrees, so it's best to check there first.]
I've already sent Naira to look from the sky, so if she spots any of them or sees any tracks, she can let us know. We can't rely on her for too long though -- it's a little too cold for that.
[Though hopefully they won't need to, as spotting one or two horses may lead them to the rest.]
I am amazed you convinced her to go out into this weather in the first place.
[He's touched that Claude was willing to send his familiar out into this miserable weather. Thankfully it doesn't take too terribly long for them to traverse the open expanse towards the edge of the forest. Once they're in deep enough for the snow to become shallower and the winds to be cut by the trees Lorenz lets the hood of his coat fall back so he can shake some of the snow out of his hair.
It's... rather eerily quiet once their out of the wind, of course. But then... the forest also seems to be considerably less wintry further in, doesn't it?]
[Claude's keeping his hood up, mostly because it's too cold and this is the best way to stay warm. When he notices the snow is abating deeper in, he frowns.]
And bothersome. It's a lot easier to track a horse in snow.
[Not that they won't leave tracks in soil, too, but they'll be a lot less distinctive, especially for Naira up in the air.]
We might be on the right track, though. There could be a good grazing spot around here, or a water source that isn't frozen. [You know, assuming they can graze or drink if they're really cursed to have bird faces.]
[The leaf litter is going to make it far more difficult to follow any tracks in the earth as well. Lorenz sighs and shrugs helplessly. At least they can move a little more freely?]
Water would likely be our best bet... and easier to track down, I'd think.
[They can at least listen for water. But it is going to take some time to find much of anything useful. Weaving between trees, looking for open spaces the horses might have favored, listening for the soft rush of moving water.
As they head deeper though... it's not water that can be heard but something else entirely. Something that has Lorenz cocking his head, brow knitting in concern as he tries to figure out what.... in the world...?]
Do you hear- [A pause, looking for all the world like a curious puppy.] Ah... perhaps someone else has come looking as well. I did show everyone where I'd been searching when Safrano ran off.
[Well.... he correctly identified it's voices? That's... something....]
Or they're thieves looking to steal the horses for themselves. They might've even laid the curse in the first place.
[Claude opts to take point, being the sneakier of the two, keeping one hand on his blade and using the trees as cover. As he gets closer, though, he can hear the voices much more audibly, and the voices -- and accompanying noises -- are very clearly nothing to do with a search party.
He peeks around a tree into a clearing, and whatever he sees has him retreating immediately and patting Lorenz on the shoulder, saying in hushed tones--]
Welp, nothing to see this way, they've got it covered. Time to go! [In an ideal world, Lorenz will just follow him to double back and not ask questions. Of course, the worst case scenario is Lorenz taking a peek himself, then causing a scene.]
[He knows Claude is more cautious than he is, never mind sneakier. Still... he has had such an overwhelmingly positive experience with the otherworlders here that he honestly hadn't considered something so nefarious. Lorenz hangs back as Claude creeps in closer, hard light flashing as it forms into the elegant sword he has taken to favoring.
Only for Claude to switch gears so fast it makes his head hurt.]
I... What?
[For a moment he just blinks after Claude, unmoving, frowning.]
Who has what covered? Khalid!?
[See now if Claude had simply told him he'd have no reason to look but... look he does. Only to squawk in dismay and spin around so fast he half smacks into the tree he'd been leaning around. He presses his back to it, hands clamped over his mouth and eyes wide, absolutely horrified.]
[Hearing that undignified noise behind him and what sounds like Lorenz smacking into a tree, Claude sighs and grabs Lorenz's wrist to tug him away.]
I said there was nothing to see! [...Of course, Claude would have done exactly the same and peeked if someone told him not to, but that's besides the point.] Or, er, rather a lot on show, depending on how you look at it...
You said someone else was taking care of... something!? That's not-!!!
[He lets himself be led away but he's hardly graceful about it, stumbling after Claude for a short way, voice hushed, face blushing hard enough to be uncomfortable.]
For fun, obviously? [He lets go of Lorenz's wrist once they're a safe distance away, which is when he remembers something.] Well... Fun and profit. Now that I think about it, there's a certain quest people have been asked to carry out, and I assume they were, um, helping the ritual along.
[He runs his hands through his hair, studiously avoiding eye contact with Lorenz to hide the fact his own cheeks are tinged pink. It's hard to shock Claude, but being alone here with Lorenz with that going on nearby was...
Well. It's hard to stop his imagination going places.]
Let's just keep searching somewhere else, shall we?
[He's still absolutely horrified, clearly, but there's perhaps a bit less scandal and a bit more absolute confusion just now. Obviously it's scandalous but, more importantly...]
It's cold. There's snow! Who in their right mind-?!
[Sorry Claude he is far too flabbergasted to just continue on like that didn't happen.]
[In public? Indecent? Up against a tree like that? Dirt getting goddess knows where. Nothing about this sounds appealing?! Well except the whole.... getting rid of the snow thing. Would it be worth that sort of discomfort?
He is genuinely so confused about why anyone would do this. It seems so uncomfortable. Never mind the scandal part of it.]
[Claude sighs, but he's smiling.] The fact that it's improper or whatever is kind of the point, Lorenz. It's supposed to be liberating, you know? Just doing it out in the open like this.
Who knows, maybe one day you'll want to try it too.
[He says that with a cheery wink, before going on ahead to resume the search.]
[Murmured under his breath as he shakes his head, still not really getting it. It just seems... like so much effort when one could be snuggled up at home with their lover.
A thought that tumbles around in his head as they wander in the other direction, he's far too distracted to be much use now though. As the snow starts to creep back into the forest and the temperature begins to drop again Lorenz' steps quicken a bit so he can step up behind Claude, stop him for a moment. He doesn't let the other man turn around, just wrapping his arms around him and letting the lingering warmth of the Everwarm potion do it's work.]
It's cold... we don't have to go back into the snow just yet.
[Perfectly reasonable but there's a hint of that confusion and thoughtfulness in his voice that hints that there's something more to it.]
[Claude stops still, one of his hands coming to rest over Lorenz's arms wrapped around him. He wishes he could read his expression, but his tone is somewhat telling on its own.]
Yeah...? We could stop for a bit if you want a break.
[They've been wandering around for a while, so it's totally a reasonable suggestion, and Lorenz does feel very warm, being close to him like this.]
[He leans in a little, lets his cheek rest against Claude's hair.]
Maybe that's a good idea... I'd already been out here for hours when Safrano took off.
[They can find somewhere relatively free of debris and just... sit down for a little while. Which is precisely what Lorenz leads Claude to, settling in under a tree that doesn't have much in the way of undergrowth around it. And he keeps Claude close, making certain he can benefit from his warmth.]
[Claude settles down with Lorenz, enfolding an arm around him and pressing a kiss to his cheek.]
I know you're worried, but any horse from Archimedes is a toughie. They'll be okay a while longer.
[And he's right, a reprieve from the bitter chill of the snow will be good for them both. He looks up at the tree canopy overhead, of the bitter late autumn sunlight trying to peek through the trees.]
Y'know, I never would've guessed you'd be such a cuddler.
[Lorenz nods, knowing Claude is right. Archimedes' horses are sturdy, he really needn't fuss so much. Something he's able to acknowledge a little more readily when he has Claude beside him.
Of course the kiss and the comment make him blush and though his initial instinct is to withdraw and apologize he takes a deep breath and simply leans back a little to look at the other man.]
Do you think I'd be right here cuddling you if it was?
[Claude laughs, but it's good-natured. He tips his head to rest against the tree and takes off his glove, so he can reach up fondly to cup Lorenz's cheek.]
It's sweet. And it's a sign that little by little, you're learning about the things that you like about being close to someone. [...Rather than freaking out about so much as thinking about them.]
I... never had the opportunity to really be close to anyone. Not like this.
[Not just as a lover but also simply as a friend. There were so many ways such things could be taken out of context he'd always been terrified to allow it. Even if he knows Hilda and Leonie both would have happily given him hugs if he'd have let them. Maybe even Lysithea and Flayn too.
Lorenz tips his head, pressing into Claude's touch lightly.]
It's not that I don't like... other things. [And there he goes, blushing again.] You know that, right?
I just- [He trails off helplessly, uncertain how to explain the hoops his mind jumps through to get him so worked up over things that "aren't allowed" when there's no one to enforce such arbitrary rules anymore. Not here or at home.]
I know. [Claude leans in and captures Lorenz's mouth in his, briefly, his hand sliding down from Lorenz's cheek to rest on his chest. When he draws back, his voice is soft.]
You just need to learn to let go. Don't overthink it.
[He's not contrasting him to the people they saw in the forest... but he's not not making that comparison, either.]
[They're both thinking it and he knows Claude is and he feels so foolish, somehow, that he's made such a big deal of so much that everyone else seems to find unremarkable. Maybe... that's part of it, though. How casually people discuss such things, the way they speak as though there's nothing to it...
He doesn't know how to do that. To separate his heart from his actions like that. There's no way for any of this not to mean everything to him. But Claude's already possessed his heart for longer than he could say... surely he should be able to simply let everything else follow.
Lorenz huffs softly, lips curling up in a wry little smile.]
Liberating, hmm?
[Is that what he's going for here? Not that... Lorenz is complaining exactly.]
Yeah. It'd be nice not to be tied down to anything any more, wouldn't it? Living however you like? I want everyone in our new dawn to be able to live like that.
[And that goes for Lorenz, too. He presses another kiss to the corner of his mouth, peeking up at him.]
[There's another moment of hesitation, Lorenz biting his lip lightly as he considers it... That's just the trouble isn't it? Always thinking about it and never doing anything about it. So, after a deep breath he nods, something small and as much to himself as to Claude.
He tips his head to one side, reaching up to snag the seam at the tip of one finger between his teeth, pulling at the supple leather to free himself from at least one glove so he can cradle Claude's face in his hand. The glove gets dropped unceremoniously into his lap and then he leans in to kiss Claude this time. Sighing contentedly against his mouth.
Just... don't think about it, just savor the warmth of him, the softness of his lips, the weight of him... don't think.]
[Claude's eyes slide shut as he feels Lorenz melt into the kiss. There was nothing to think about, no one around them except the distant sound of birdsong or a breeze rustling the trees. It's... nice, just getting to be alone together like this.]
