[what a coincidence -- there are two other bracelets laying in wait for new owners! but Cecelia's not about to bring that up just yet; she has to see if this cheeky, nosy fellow would 1: want the role himself, 2: know someone for it, and 3: be worthy of it himself! it's...practical pickiness.
she lets him mull things over in peace for a time, content to finishing composing her shorthand thoughts about the above -- observations on him, mostly, tied to some additional thought given to the desert at large. perilous though it may be, there were survivors to give accounts in the first place, so...
eventually:] Mm. We have time. Not unlimited time, but time all the same. Time enough to learn and grow stronger, in any case.
I suppose I'll just have to pause that line of thinking for now, then. Once we have a better plan, who knows what's possible.
[He calls his familiar back before she's tempted to go out into the desert herself, and she obediently swoops in and lands on his shoulder, where he offers her more chin scritches.]
Unless there's anything else to cover, I think I've seen all I need to see.
[she lifts the quill, closing the book and slipping the quill in the binding. she stands with a soft sigh, tucking the book into her satchel and taking a moment to adjust her shawl.]
Cement this place to memory, Claude. Lest you become complacent and forget what fate awaits us all.
[what a pleasant thing to say! in any case, she holds her hands out to him once more.]
[when his eyes close, Cecelia risks a brief, grim smile before her own eyes close and she draws in a breath. her familiar draws in close, horn glowing and assisting her in the channeling of the magic that kindles the spark upon the bracelet. as before, it glows, brightens, and then engulfs them in a flash of light. the oppressive stillness of the brink is banished, and they are once again in the midst of the breathing, active land just outside the city proper.
Cecelia lets out her breath very carefully, her brow knit as she tries to acclimate to the dizziness overtaking her; it means gripping onto Claude's hands a bit tighter for a moment to keep her balance. there's got to be some method to expanding her magical stamina here, because this feeling will get old quite fast.]
Well then... [she withdraws her hands, combing hair back behind her ear as she looks over her shoulder toward the city.] Curiosity sated for now, mm?
[Claude holds onto her hands tightly while she steadies herself, blinking as his eyes adjust now that they're back in bright daylight and not a star-filled void.]
I'd say so. Thanks for bringing me along. [His hands drop back to his side.] Anything I can do to repay the favour? You look wiped out.
Mm. [she closes her eyes for a moment as she turns her head back to him, nodding and then opening them back up.] I'll need an arm to lean on for my walk back to my lodging, so if you don't mind...
Oh! Of course. [He offers his arm, and he'll allow her to lead the way from there.] Can you use siphon magic? If you can, you're welcome to take a little of mine.
[gods, she needs to find a better space to do this than out in a field if she's going to be this worn out each time. the pace is slow, and that aggravates her, but she doesn't let that eke out into her tone.]
Ah, no. No...nothing of that sort. I just need to rest for a time, is all. Surely it will get easier the more I do it, the way a muscle grows when practiced. [so long as magic follows some sense here...]
Maybe bring a horse next time? I'd sweep you off your feet and carry you, gentleman that I am, but... I'm not that strong. [He laughs. Where's Dimitri when you need him?]
You're probably right, though. All magic seems to improve with practice here.
Better to simply obtain a more convenient location than wind up having to care for a living animal, I'd wager, mm? I'll be working on that, especially since...this seems to be the way of things for the foreseeable future.
[which is...grim. she'd had a modicum of hope she could contact her celestial cohorts to, if not rescue her outright, at least give her some of the typical tools she'd need to solve this matter! but if they're truly as frozen as the rest of the realms...then she's on her own without her own resources.
it's been a very long time since she's felt this feeble, and part of her is afraid of what the long-term impacts of being in this place will do to her lifespan, distorted as it already is.
some of that anxiety plays outwardly in the way her mouth goes taut and her eyes wince, smoothed back out to neutrality after closing her eyes a few paces as they pass back into the noisy city and she has more to deal with besides her troubles.]
About that, though...improvement. Have you noticed it within yourself? I assume you've lingered here a touch longer than I.
[He's studying her expression from the corner of his eye while trying not to be too obvious about it, wondering could be the cause of her anxiety, before turning his attention to the city as they enter. He never thought he'd be relieved to see so many people and buildings, after all that emptiness and desolation.]
For myself? Only tiny improvements. But I did meet someone who's good enough at dark magic by this point that she offered to teach me a few tricks.
I would hope not, especially considering how things were handled at the masque. I pray you won't be conducting any, mm...magical experiments of such scope yourself.
[dryly:] Concealment breeds undue confidence, I've found. But I'll just have to take you at your word for the moment, shall I? For that is what little I do have in your regard.
[oh, dear. Cecelia hopes he isn't expecting her to call that creature cute...
she makes a faint, noncommittal sound at that, giving him the win without conceding a point.]
I'm perhaps projecting a bit to much of my resentment over the masquerade onto you, and for that, you have my apology. [for now.] Dark magics have their place, for better or worse.
Apology accepted, no hard feelings. [The masquerade was definitely... a thing that happened. Anyone would be right to be annoyed at dark magic generally after experiencing it.]
Although it does make me curious about what kinds of magic you have.
[she could just let him guess, but...enh. she's tired. so:] I'm working on mastering elemental spells based on what texts I've skimmed in the Archivist's library. My penchant seems to be for fire. [which is...unsurprising.] Given the scope of how elements intermingle, I've more than enough to study.
I studied a tiny bit of elemental magic back home... never really took to it, but I had a knack for wind. [Maybe also not surprising...?] This is the first I've heard about an archivist's library, though. Maybe I'll go take a look for myself.
[she raises an eyebrow.] You've not ventured there already? Are there far more interesting sights within these city walls that I've failed to hear about?
Ah, this city's plenty interesting, but not quite. It's more that I got caught up in reading things in Camelot's libraries, I never would've thought to look for texts further afield just yet. But I'll keep it in mind!
[Little does he know he might have trouble gaining access unless he answers the entry questions honestly, but that's a problem for another time.]

I promise I won't forget. Not even for a second. [And on that sombre note, he'll close his eyes, taking his hands in hers.]

Hexes and manipulations as a forte? How foreboding.

Hey, I didn't choose it! And it's not like I go around just hexing people at random.
